Being a dad

September 11th, 2008 by

God it hurts sometimes.
Here’s an example.

This is my four year old Maddie:
Image

She is perfection in innocence.

As we sat to dine last week, true to form, Madeleine was in quite the jolly mood. Smiling, and laughing… and joking. This is pretty much standard fare at the Haywire household. We try, at just about every turn, to make each other laugh. The rules of our never ending game is… if I can make you laugh, it means that you love me… and if I try to make you laugh… it mean that I love you. Quite sweet really.

However that night, we were in a ‘there is a time for goofing off, and a time for being somewhat serious’ teaching sort of mood. Maddie would have none of that. Actually, I’m not sure that she understood or even understands now about being serious. That, admittedly is likely my fault.

On this particular night, she’d get up, run around the table, flailing her arms trying to make her older sister laugh, and then quickly mug for the non-existent camera that we were all holding in her eyes.

This transpired for a short period before Mrs. Hay and I decided to tell her that we were serious, and that it was time to sit and eat with the family like a ‘big girl’. It came to a point where I had to draw the line and tell her that punishment would be the next result. Still trying to make us laugh, she got up, and did it again.

It was only when I finally sent her to her room that the lesson was actualized. She started to cry softly and tried to swallow the golf ball that had appeared in her throat. I virtually had to duct tape myself to my wall of dad’liness before walking up to finish the lesson. Those of you who don’t have children might not realize it, but that is one of the worst parts about parenting. My stomach hurt… and like my angel’s, the golf ball in my throat just wouldn’t pass.

Finally, I sold myself that enough time had transpired, and that the lesson had been learned. I walked up and put my arm around this perfect human being. Though she was still playing her match with the tears, and the tears were still winning, I was able to reassure her how much I loved her.

I hugged her and did the fatherly thing… “when I say that I am serious… it means I am serious”… blah blah blah. I finished with a warm kiss on her forehead and effectively told her that when her adrenaline wore off… and she could stop crying, that she could come back down. She opted to stay until her tears passed.

So…
Fast forward to about 10 minutes later. I am in my study waiting doing some work. The crying has subsided now for about two minutes when I look up, and low and behold… there is Maddie peeking through the crack in my door. Only… she is wearing the cutest care bear halloween costume that completely surrounded her little body all with the exception of her cute little face, which was still a little red and swollen, and perfectly framed by her fuzzy yellow carebear ears.

Says I: “Sweety, you are so cute, why are you dressed in that, come here and give me a hug.”
Says she on her approach: “Daddy, I just want to make you laugh.”

And, at that very moment, my heart caved in like an aluminum can in a vacuum.

That’s a true story. As I write this… I want to go upstairs and wake her up and laugh with her, but alas, tonight is a school night for me, and four year olds need their sleep.

In many houses, people harp on responsibility, success, athletics, or a whole host of other things as a virtue.
In my house, my kids think that being funny is a virtue… they think that it’s something to strive for.
Such is the life at the Haywire household.

My favorite poem for today

April 29th, 2008 by

This is just to say
I have eaten the plums
that were
in the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

William Carlos Williams

And here are some other takes on the poem:

I chopped down the house that you had been saving to live in next summer.
I am sorry, but it was morning, and I had nothing to do
and its wooden beams were so inviting.

or…
I have pulled the
Pin from that grenade
On the desk.

Forgive me.
I thought it was
My keyring,
And

and my favorite….
at our wedding i dissappeared briefly to have sex with your sister up against the back of the speakers
what can I say,
the chardonnay was so fresh and cold and I,
so full of love and a sense of family
and I said I am sure that someday we’ll laugh about this,
and by someday, I meant that day.
and by laugh, I meant laugh.

All together at first…

March 27th, 2008 by

Just under the surface I shall be, all together at first, then separate and drift, through all the earth and perhaps in the end through a cliff into the sea, something of me. A ton of worms in an acre, that is a wonderful thought, a ton of worms, I believe it.

If I were God

March 26th, 2008 by

If I were God… i’d have a WAY better sense of humor… i’d make a disease that only straight guys could get while masturbating to hardcore gay porn…. Cause… that would be funny when they go to the doctor…

I thought of that last night while masturbating to hardcore gay porn.
